Runaways Are Endangered Missing Children

No matter why they disappeared, children deserve to be found—and helped.

Children don’t just vanish.
They run because something is pulling them—or something is pushing them away.

These are called push and pull factors, and they vary from child to child. Some kids leave in search of safety, connection, or belonging. Others are manipulated into leaving by someone who doesn’t have their best interests at heart.

But regardless of the cause, one truth remains: Runaways are at high risk of exploitation, harm, and further disappearance.

At NCPTF, we treat every missing child as endangered, regardless of the reason they disappeared. We help law enforcement locate these kids, uncover patterns behind their repeated disappearances, and connect them to the support they need to stop running and start healing.

Runaways are the nation's largest segment of missing children.

This isn’t rare. It’s happening in communities across the country—right now. Here's what you need to know:

Runaways aren’t just kids who broke the rules.
They’re often kids trying to escape a situation they can’t survive—or chasing a promise that turns out to be a trap. Whatever the reason, one thing is clear: When a child disappears, their risk skyrockets.

Predators know how to find kids who are vulnerable.
And the longer they’re missing, the more danger they face.

let's find them

Missing children are in danger–and we can help them.

Find + Listen + Help

The National Child Protection Task Force responds to the crisis of missing and runaway youth through rapid-response case assistance and Missing Child Rescue Operations—working alongside law enforcement to locate endangered children and support the agencies tasked with their recovery.

Every operation helps identify runaway patterns, locate high-risk children, and connect them with the support they’ve often gone without.

The weeks and months we spend preparing for a Missing Child Rescue Operation are focused on one thing: strengthening the systems meant to protect these kids. Because the truth is—many communities are overwhelmed, and far too many children are labeled “runaways” and left without meaningful help.

NCPTF helps ensure that every child is met with urgency, empathy, and trauma-informed support—no matter how many times they’ve gone missing.

“Runaway” Youth: What you need to know and how you can help – with Melissa Kaiser, LBSW

Runaway youth are often misunderstood, viewed as “rebellious” or “troubled,” but behind every runaway is a story of pain, fear, or a desperate need to survive. Instead of judging these youth, we need to see their actions as a call for help and understand that they often run from unsafe environments or toward perceived love and acceptance. By changing the narrative and offering compassion, guidance, and support, we can empower these young people to seek safety, find their voice, and build brighter futures.
